I’m sorry it’s been so long since
my last post.
I bought a new computer before I went to
Gillette because it was supposed to help me be more efficient and have a
better internet connection while I am out of town.
Well, it’s been so long since I bought a
computer that I forgot how long it takes to load all of the software
that I need.
Finding extra time the week of the finals is
no easy task.
You all know how I feel about sleep.
It outranks a lot of things when time is
short.
If you haven’t heard by now,
Texas brought home the national title again.
Yea!!
The boys’ team also won and the girls came
in third or fourth.
Roger Brandt placed in the top 10 in both
long goes of the boys cutting with identical scores of 215.
In the short go he scored a 209.
I’ve lost my notes on his final placing but
it was in the top 10 which is pretty cool.
Good job Roger!
I have the new membership forms
from nationals and will be getting them mailed out when I get home next
week.
When I left Gillette, I took a detour through South
Dakota to see Mount Rushmore.
It was amazing!
I’ve been in Cheyenne since Monday morning
and leave tomorrow to go to Steamboat Springs, CO for a rodeo before
coming back to Texas on Sunday.
I am so ready to get back home, sleep in my
own bed and get back to a regular routine.

The second go at Gallup wasn't as
nice to our Region 1 contestants as the first go was. Lydia
and Dalton both had penalties that prevented them from qualifying
for the short go. Emily had a 13.882 in the goat tying and
finished 27th - just out of the top 20.
The team
standings went back and forth between Texas and Oklahoma throughout
the second go and the short go. In the end, the Texas girls
prevailed winning their team title. The Texas boys finished
second to Oklahoma and overall, Oklahoma took the national trophy
back home with them.
I want to
congratulate the four members from Region 1 who competed in Gallup,
as well as, all of our members who competed throughout the year.
It takes participation from all of you to create the level of
performance needed to advance to the state level and the national
level. As members of Texas Junior High Rodeo, those first and
second place team trophies belong to you, too. Good job!
I am slowly
getting back on track this week. I had to be lazy for a day
and then find the motivation to clean up my office. Things
tend to get stacked on the floor when I get home from my trips and I
have trouble focusing on my work until everything gets put away.
Now that my office is in working order again, I have moved on to
doing laundry. :)
I have the
new schedule confirmed and will be posting it later tonight. I
know everyone is excited to see when we will start and where we will
be going this year. Membership
applications won't be mailed until early August.
Addresses for last year's eighth graders will automatically be moved
into the high school database so don't worry about not being
included when applications are mailed. If you were a member
last year - high school or junior high, you will receive membership
information for this year.
Anyone who
was not a member last year and would like to receive membership
information when it is sent out, needs to e-mail me their name and
address. My e-mail is
tri-statehsrodeo@att.net.

The first go round is complete is
Region 1 is in the standings. Lydia Brown finished third in
the poles with a 20.638. Emily Logan was 11th in the goats
with an 11.598 and Dalton Wren was 19th in the chute dogging with a
2.969. All are in very good position to make the short go on
Saturday night if they repeat their first go success in the second
go.
Reed
Sessions competed in the shooting competition yesterday and finished
fifth in the nation!
Team
standings after the first go have Texas in the lead for the boys,
girls and overall team standings. Hopefully that will be how
we end up on Saturday night, too. Texas has yet to bring home
a national title for the junior high division. I think this
may be our year. :)

We are off to a good start in
Gallup with Dalton Wren's 2.969 in the chute dogging last night.
Tomorrow we will get to see Emily Logan in the goat tying, Lydia
Brown in the poles and Reed Sessions in the shooting competition.
I will try to update again on Wednesday. You can also go to
the national website for complete results -
http://nhsra.com/index.php/2010-junior-high-finals.

As my computer ages - and me too -
it gets harder and harder to update when I am on the road. I
should have time to do some serious computer shopping when I get
back from Gallup. Until then, please bear with me. I
will try to update on a somewhat regular basis so you know how our
Region 1 members are doing out in New Mexico.
Now for a
recap from Abilene's high school state finals:

Katelynn
Brownlee, Region 1 Queen, was named third runner-up for the title of
THSRA Queen. She is pictured here with Kennady Johnson, Region
1 Princess, who was the first runner-up at Gonzales.
We didn't
fare well in the Dodge Truck push on Monday but on Tuesday night, we
redeemed our region by winning third in the Ariat Queen Contest.
Logan Dee, these are the kind of photos that can come back and haunt
you later in life, but for now they are very entertaining!
Thanks for being such a good sport - and a pretty girl. :)

First go
round buckle winners: Colt Cleavinger in boys' cutting, Colter
White and Lane Hall in bull riding and Shayley Morriss in pole
bending.
Second go
round buckle winners: Rogert Brandt in boys' cutting, Landon
Williams in calf roping, Nicole Espenson in pole bending and Ryan
McIntyre in bareback riding.
Like our
junior high members, we had good representation in the short go on
Saturday:
Boys's
Cutting - Luke Abraham, Roger Brandt and Colt Cleavinger
Bareback
Riding - Robert Douglas and Ryan McIntyre
Breakaway
Roping - Kortni McConnell
Calf Roping
- Myles Brown, Pryce Harris and Seaver Tate
Goat Tying -
Kaela Haddon
Team Roping
- Aaron Macy / Landon Williams, Lucas Screws / Pecos Thomas and
Seaver Tate / Hayden Moore
Pole Bending
- Nicole Espenson and Kortni McConnell
Bull Riding
- Colt Cleavinger and Colter White
Region 1
will be sending one member to Gillette in the quest for a national
title. Roger Brandt finished third in the boys' cutting to
advance with the national team. Congratulations Roger and Good
Luck!

state finals results, click
here.
I leave
tomorrow for the junior high national finals in Gallup. Keep
your fingers crossed for Lydia Brown, Emily Logan, Reed Sessions and
Dalton Wren. I will try to post updates on the Wrangler News
page after they compete.
I will be
home at least 8 full days after Gallup. Woo Hoo! Along
with a ton of filing I need to do, I will be updating the website
with next year's rodeo schedule and sharing some valuable
information that was discussed in our board meeting this week.
Even though this year is not officially wrapped up yet, it is pretty
exciting to look ahead to what is planned for next year. Stay
tuned!

I really enjoyed going to Gonzales
last week but now Abilene has crept up on me and I am running behind
again (as usual!) Here are a few reminders to check off your
packing list before you leave this weekend:
-
Final report card - you must have this. It is your ticket to get
into check-in
on Sunday.
-
If you still have your contestant bio (blue paper), please bring it
with you to Abilene. I promise not to forget to bring the ones
I already have. If you don't have one, you will need to fill
out a new one at check-in.
-
Contestant Check-in is over at 1pm. It would be wonderful if
everyone could be there by noon just so I don't have to worry
about you being late and getting sent home. Lie to yourself
about the deadline if mental games are what it takes to get
there on time. Cutting contestants need to be checked in by
5pm on
Wednesday.
-
If you were not at Vernon's Tri-State Finals, I will have your
t-shirt at check-in. I have just a handful of extras for sale
if anyone wants one. They are $15 each and range from youth
large to adult large.
-
Monday
night is
the Dodge Truck Push. If you are on the team and own a pair of
cleats, bring them with you. Steaks for the entire region are
on the line and Tom wants to make up those measly hundredths of
a second that we lost by last year. There is also a rumor
floating around that I will dance in the middle of the arena if
you win. We will never know if it is true unless you win. :)
-
Wednesday afternoon
is the Special Kids Rodeo. We are working one of the
barrel
racing stations. I will bring the cones. You
bring the smiles to the kids' faces.
-
And finally, after last week's wreck in the junior high grand entry
where two horses and two girls were injured, the high school
grand entries have been modified to keep a tight rein on the
speed. No horses can go faster than a trot. If anyone is
spotted going faster than a trot, the music will be turned off
and the region will have to leave the arena. I don't know how
far along the choreography is, but the junior high kids came up
with a great grand entry performance last minute and everyone
was on foot. You are not required to have horses in our grand
entry - except for Logan Dee's pony. Being on foot lets
everyone participate and no one gets hurt. Be thinking about
what you want to do on this. Our practice time will probably be
on Thursday
afternoon. We perform in
Thursday night's
performance.
See you in a few days,

posted 6.9.10
I need to make a few
corrections from my Gonzales results. Emily Logan won second
in the goat tying - not third - and Lydia Brown won third in the
poles - not second. It doesn't change anything with their
qualification to nationals. It was just a posting error on my
part. I apologize for the mix-up.
Phillip Graf asked me to post
a note thanking all of the volunteers who helped last week with the
boys' goat tying and the bull riding. It makes such a big
difference when you have plenty of help compared to not enough help.
Everything runs so much smoother. Plus, it makes Region 1 look
good.
Every few years, the timing
works out where I can take a few days off before going to Abilene
and go to the Garden City, KS pro rodeo with my dad. This is
one of those years. He ropes in the slack this afternoon and
then it is back home and back to work. My mom is the rodeo
secretary here so that is an added bonus to get to visit with her
since she is on the road for the next three months.
Everything I do pretty much
involves rodeo in one way or another. Changing up the routine
keeps it fun. I love being a secretary but it is nice to work
for the rodeo photographer during the summer and have different
responsibilities. It is also nice coming to a rodeo with no
responsibilities, like today, and just watching what goes on around
you. With the high school national finals in Gillette, WY this
summer, I will get to stop in Cheyenne on the way up there and back.
My mom works that rodeo, too, so I have a place to stay. :)
Cheyenne was our family vacation every year when I was growing up.
I have a lot of fond memories of that place but it will be a
bittersweet return this year. My last visit two years ago was
the day my horse died - just two hours before I got to town.
It feels like a wound that won't heal because the scab keeps getting
knocked off so maybe going back will help jumpstart the healing
process.
Wow. Sorry to be so
depressing. I can't afford a therapist so I have to share my
troubles with you. Hope you don't mind. I'll try to keep
it to a minimum and post more happy thoughts than sad ones.
Slack is starting so I am
going to see how good my internet connection is and get this posted.
Then I'm going to go sit in the stands and enjoy this wonderful
sport that we all love. Have a great day,

It is Saturday night and the
parking lot is almost empty. The trailer is packed up and I am
waiting for the computer to finish making back-up copies of all of
the photos for the week. I figured this would be a good time
to wrap up our week in Gonzales for the folks back home.
Our grand entry was great!
Even though I am a little bit prejudiced, I think we had the best
one. Thank you to Rhonda Kirkpatrick for putting together the
audio and the parents who worked out the new choreography at the
last minute. I saw John and Christi Bland, Kellie Macy, Talley
Brown and Rhonda at practice. I know there were others who
helped but I can't remember for sure who it was. (You know how
I am when I don't get enough sleep.) And of course, thank you
to all of our members who participated. You guys were
outstanding!
Region 1 continued to excel in
the second go round with four more buckle winners and 12 more in the
top ten. Lydia Brown placed fourth in poles, Dalton Wren
placed 3rd in chute dogging, Emily Logan won the girls' goat tying
with her fastest time to date - 7.90 seconds and JD Reed and Kory
McConnell placed fourth in team roping.
We had 20 contestants qualify
for the short go round with several in two events. Here is a
breakdown:
Pole Bending:
Lydia Brown and Kellie Collier
Chute Dogging - Wesley Sims
and Dalton Wren
Calf Roping - Wesley Sims
Girls' Breakaway - Lydia Brown
and Kellie Collier
Girls' Goat Tying - Lindsey
Sharp and Emily Logan
Boys' Goat Tying - Wyatt Sims
Barrel Racing - Brogan Macy
Team Roping - JD Reed / Kory
McConnell, Clayton Williams / Cress Lujan, Lindsey Sharp / Caydon
Stone and KC Tippett / Barrett Bland
Ribbon Roping - Payson Moore /
Madison Milligan, Barrett Bland / Brogan Macy and Zack Kirkpatrick /
Matti Smith
Bull Riding - Brokk Baldwin
The short go wasn't as kind as
the two long go rounds. There are no buckles awarded in the
short go but we had 6 contestants place in the top ten in their
events and 7 that placed in the average.
Our national team members are
Dalton Wren - STATE CHAMPION in chute dogging, Lydia Brown - reserve
State Champion in pole bending, Emily Logan - third in goat tying
and Reed Sessions - reserve State Champion in the NRA shoot.
Congratulations to all of our
members who competed in Gonzales and Good Luck to the four going to
Gallup next month. You represent Region 1 so well. I am
very proud of you all.

It has been a busy week so far
in Gonzales for the junior high finals. I have been wanting to
update everyone back home but today is the first day I've had time
to get away from my work computer and spend some time on my own
computer. And now the internet connection is horribly slow.
If I can't get this uploaded today, I will keep adding to the notes
until I get better service.
There have been some highs and
lows this week and lots of good stuff in between. We had a
huge scare on Tuesday when John Sharp (Lindsey's younger brother)
got caught in a strong river current. Lindsey recognized that
he was in trouble, swam to him and pulled him from the river on the
opposite bank. Everyone is fine but it certainly shook us all
up pretty good.
Last night there was a
horrific collision in the Region 10 grand entry. Both girls
involved will recover from minor injuries (that looked major.)
I haven't heard the status of the horses involved. Tonight's
grand entries will not involve any horses so Region 1 is in the
process of re-choreographing their routine that they will present
before tonight's performance. I can't wait to see it and hear
the audio accompaniment that all of the kids have contributed to.
The first go - except for bull
riding - was completed Wednesday morning. We had eleven
members win buckles and a total of 20 who placed in the top 10 in
their events.
Back row: Jarrett
Dougherty - 2nd in breakaway, Clayton Williams - 2nd in team roping,
Dalton Wren - 3/4th in chute dogging, Zack Kirkpatrick - 4th in
ribbon roping, Barrett Bland - 4th in team roping & KC Tippett - 4th
in team roping.
First row: Cress Lujan -
2nd in team roping, Kelsey Graf - 4th in goat tying, Matti Smith -
4th in ribbon roping, Kellie Collier - 1st in breakaway & Lydia
Brown - 4th in poles. Reed Sessions is not pictured. He
won 2nd in the NRA shoot and qualified for nationals.

We had a pretty major storm
come through last night that caused some power issues during the
performance but everyone took it in stride. They played some
fun music and a lot of the kids came down to the arena floor and
danced away their excess energy. The delay caused the
performance to last until midnight and everyone was pretty tired
this morning.
Kennady Johnson was the first
runner-up in the princess contest held earlier this week. She
won three individual events with the rulebook test being one of
them. Princess and Queen contestants don't get enough credit
for the preparation required to do their events. I guarantee
all of them know your rulebook better than you do. If you ever
need help finding a rule, look for the nearest rodeo queen.
Barrett Bland narrowly missed
getting elected for state student president for next year.
There were only 5 votes that separated him from Region 10's Macy
Ashford. He ran a fun campaign and I am proud of him for
taking the plunge to get involved in the state level of student
leadership. Watch out when he gets to high school. :)
After four nights, we have yet
to win the 50/50 drawing. One more drawing to go on Friday.
Keep your fingers crossed.

I forgot a few things in my e-mail the other day:
-
We are in charge of the boys goat tying all
week. It would be nice to have 2-3 volunteers for each
performance to make sure things run smoothly. Anyone in the
arena or work pens must be in proper dress code.
-
Friday night, we will need about 10 student
volunteers to carry sponsor flags before the rodeo. We have
quite a few members competing that night so hopefully it won't
be a problem to get volunteers.
-
Friday night is also our night to work the
admission gate. We will need 3 adult volunteers for this job.
-
For Saturday's short go, we need one
volunteer to carry a flag and one volunteer to help at the front
gate.
-
The group cookouts are scheduled for Sunday,
Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. We will post the menu each
morning in the stands. There are no plans to cook on Tuesday
and Friday.
It is Wednesday night and I still haven't heard
about where everyone will be parked. I don't expect to at this
point, so it is time to make up your mind on the golf carts if you
haven't reserved one yet.
I don't need a response on this item - just think about it and we
will discuss on Sunday in the stands. Each region is required to
sell 100 50/50 tickets each day. Proceeds benefit the Texas Junior
High Division general fund. Some regions have started budgeting for
this expense so their members don't have to sell the tickets. If
they end up with the winning ticket, the winnings go back to their
region. The total for the week is $425. Winning one jackpot would
easily cover this. It is up to all of you how you want to handle
this. We will vote on Sunday.
And one more thing, I pull double-duty next week working for
Jennings Photography and helping with the grand entry and wherever
else I may be needed. I don't get to see much of the rodeo but I do
get to check out all of your photos and keep up with your progress
that way. You are welcome to come see me any time. We are in an
air-conditioned room at the end of the stands on the bucking chute
end of the arena.
Okay, I'll leave you alone now. Be safe in your travels to
Gonzales. I'll see you Saturday night.

Hello State Finalists:
We are down to the last few days before heading south to
Gonzales. I'm
pretty excited so I know you all must be, too. I have been enjoying
working at a slower pace since the Tri-State Finals wrapped up. My
batteries needed some serious re-charging. Now I am ready to get
back to the action!
Here are a few things you may need to know before you arrive in
Gonzales:
-
Report cards - if you have finished school, you need to
bring your end of
school report card. If not, you need your most recent
progress report or a note from your counselor on school
letterhead stating that you are currently passing your classes.
-
Photo ID - you need to bring your photo ID
and report card with you to check-in. You won't get in without
them. There was a generic photo ID form in your state finals
packet. If you are using it, make sure you get it notarized
before you leave home.
-
Event Directors - voting takes place at
check-in. You can vote for each event that you are entered in
at Gonzales. This is a great leadership opportunity. Please
vote - and it is okay to vote for yourself.
-
Back numbers need to be on your back after
you complete your check-in. You will need to be in full dress
code by
4pm for the mandatory contestants' meeting in the
stands. Group photos will be taken following the meeting.
-
Barrett for President! - Barrett Bland is
running for Student State President. Every contestant gets to
vote for the student officers. There will be posters at
Gonzales that will tell you when and where the voting will take
place. I think it may be
on Tuesday and
Wednesday. Please look for the signs so you don't forget to
vote.
-
Our Region 1 Princess, Kennady Johnson, is
fresh off a big win at the
Panola County Cattleman's Association Rodeo where she won
the princess division and her younger sister, Kate, won the
sweetheart division. I think Kennady has some pretty good
momentum going into the state competition. She will be
competing in horsemanship
Sunday morning. Please stop by the arena and show your
support on your way to check-in.
-
Parking - I hope to hear where our parking
spots are located before we get to Gonzales. I will forward the
information as soon as I get it. I know several of you were
trying to decide on renting golf carts and the parking location
is a major factor in that decision.
-
Saturday's short go round is designated as
"Junior High Riding in Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness."
-
There are nightly jackpots for
goat tying, tiedown, breakaway and team roping. There is an
information flyer at this link -
http://twjhd.net/results/Jackpot%20Schedule.pdf.
-
Mandatory Contestants' Meeting is
Sunday at 4pm. Please arrive by
3:45pm so that
individual photos can be taken before the meeting starts. They
will be displayed as part of our decorations.
Call me
if you have any questions about what is going on. Otherwise, I'll
see you this weekend!

I spoke with Connie Cessnun last
night - Ty's mom. He had surgery in Amarillo on Sunday and the
doctors put a titanium rod in his femur. He is home and moving
around on crutches but will miss the next two weeks of school.
The Cessnun Family would like to thank everyone for the calls of
concern and get well wishes for Ty. You've shown them
firsthand how our Tri-State Family comes together to take care of
and support each other. Thank you.
I am driving east for the weekend
to Carthage for my last pro rodeo for a couple of months. The
office phone will be forwarded if you need anything. When I
get back, it will be time to start gathering up any loose ends on
the junior high finals in Gonzales. Only two weeks left before
we head south! Have a great weekend,

Results and points are finally
updated. Checks will go out tomorrow. Our payoff has
rebounded from last year's major dip in added money thanks to $2450
from the silent auction, $2460 from Yard Bird Bingo, sponsorships
renewed by our student officers and all of the program ads and
buckle sponsorships sold by the membership. Each event
received $800 in added money - twice the amount added a year ago.
Every little bit helps. Good job everyone!

I need to
finish paying bills and getting deposits ready tonight so I can
finish up the results pages. For those who don't know this,
Tri-State adds money to each event's payoff. Once everything
is paid for, we decide how money is needed to get through the summer
and then the rest of the money in the account is divided up for
added money. I hope to have everything done and checks in the
mail tomorrow afternoon.
I want to
thank you all for the roses on Saturday morning. I love them!
They are beautiful and make my office smell so sweet. I hope I
didn't appear ungrateful when I didn't say anything but I cannot
speak in front of crowds unless I am able to prepare something to
say in advance. I am used to staying in the background so
being called out in front of everyone at the meeting caught me off
guard. And to be honest, I didn't want to embarrass myself
when I started crying. And I know I would have if I had
started talking. So, thank you again. I love you guys so
much. You have no idea how important you all are to me.

And here is a list of the

Three days and counting! Can you
believe it? Here are some updates and reminders for our weekend in
Vernon.
-
The order of
events has changed slightly. We will begin each performance
with steer wrestling, then breakaway roping, then we will
combine the bareback and saddle bronc riding. The rest of the
order remains the same: barrels, calf roping, goat tying,
ribbon roping, pole bending, team roping and bull riding.
-
When you
arrive at check-in on Friday, you need to have the following
items:
-
5th
six weeks report card or progress report for the 9 weeks. I
will post a list of who has turned theirs in to the office
on the website tonight. If I already have yours, you do not
need to bring another copy.
-
Yard Bird
Bingo tickets. Each contestant needs to sell at least $25
worth for each game. If you would like to sell extra
tickets, you may pick them up Friday – or I can mail them to
you either today or tomorrow. There are about 30 sets of
five left. Any unsold tickets just subtract from your
overall profit.
-
Silent
auction item. Bring this with you Friday night. All
donated items will stay in the Exhibit building for the
weekend so they will be safe.
-
We have a big
ticket item for the auction. KT Cattle (the Best Family) has
donated a 2 year old filly. She will be in a stall this weekend
so you can check her out before the live bidding on Sunday. I
will post a copy of her registration on the website tonight.
The winning bidder will be able to take her home Sunday so make
sure you have room in your trailer if you think you will be
bidding.
-
If you are
entered at Abilene, please plan for a grand entry practice
session on Saturday afternoon. We will also have a meeting to
discuss costume ideas. There WILL NOT be a group photo
(since we don’t have the costumes figured out yet.)
-
I just
received the draw for Abilene this morning. I will get it
posted to the Region 1 page this evening.
Well, that’s all I’ve got for now.
I think it will be a good weekend. I’m looking forward to seeing
everyone and having a great Finals!
