WHEN?
June 1 - 7,
2008
Entry forms are
due at Plainview on April 20th.

WHERE?
Gonzales, Texas ~
J B Wells Arena

WHO QUALIFIES?
The Top 8 in each
event. In the event one of the Top 8 Finalists draws out or is
unable to compete, the next contestant in line shall move up and in
case of a tie, all will be allowed to move up.
Team Ropers - the
combined total of your points and your partner's points determines
where you rank in the Top 8. You will designate on your entry
form whether you are a header or a heeler.
Ribbon Ropers -
the combined total of your points and your partner's points
determines where you rank in the Top 8. You will designate on
your entry form whether you are a roper or a runner.

HOW MUCH?
Entry fees are $60
per event. Stock charges are $10 per timed event and $20 for
the junior bull riding. Each contestant pays a $25 office
charge.
Adult season
passes are $50 and child season passes are $30. There are 9
performances. I've never been to this event so I don't how
much individual tickets are but you can still buy the season pass
once you get to Gonzales. (Hint: the draw is set up so
that multi-event contestants only compete in one event per slack or
performance, if possible.)
Each contestant
gets one stall for each event they qualified in - excluding chute
dogging and junior bull riding. Each stall is $80 for the
week. If you plan to take a back-up horse or one for the
nightly jackpots, the extra stall will cost you $160. **All
stalls must be reserved at time of entry. You cannot show up
in Gonzales with an extra horse and expect to get a stall.
Parking is $80 and
all spaces have full hook-ups. There will not be a "honey
wagon". Regions will be parked together in groups.
Contestants get the ground first but if any hook-ups are not
reserved, then the City of Gonzales will allow other family members
to park on the grounds. To make reservations with the City for
extra family, call 830-672-3192.
Now for the really
good news: All of your entry fees, stalls, parking and season
tickets must be paid when your entry form is turned in at Plainview.
These payments will be deposited April 21st in the Region 1 account.
Then I send one check to the State Office with all of your forms.

WHAT'S GOING ON?
Here is a
tentative
schedule of events
(revised
as of 3.21.08)
for the week and the
order of events for each
performance.
Each region is required
to work in specified places throughout the week.
-
Program sales
before each performance ~ Region 1 is paired up with Region 6
for the 5th performance Thursday night and the 8th performance
Saturday morning. We will need two adult volunteers for
each shift and one more to help with the Short Go performance
Saturday night when all of the regions work.
-
Carry
sponsor flags in
the grand entry ~ Region 1 is schedule for the 1st performance
Tuesday night and the 6th performance Friday morning. We
are working with other regions on this, so I don't know how many
contestants will be needed. Please take the initiative to
be there and be ready in case there is a shortage of contestants
from the other regions.
-
Boy's goat tying ~
Tom White will be looking for adult volunteers to help with the
boy's goat tying. You don't have to work every performance
but please help out at least once while you are down there.
Volunteers will need to be in proper dress code.

ANY ACCOMMODATIONS?
Motels are
limited in the Gonzales area. There is supposed to be a
Choice Hotel ready by June but the chain's website did not show
it in their listings yet. I'll see what else I can find.
The City of Gonzales will take reservations for RV hook-ups down
by the river and at the RV park on the outskirts of town.
Their number is 830-672-3192.
Check this out!
I was able to block some rooms for Region 1 at the
Carefree Inn and Suites. Rates are $55 + tax on weekdays
and will pro bably go up to $69 + tax for the weekend. Make
sure you tell them you are with Region 1 when making your
reservation. The number is 830-672-9611.
Since no one has made
reservations at the Carefree Inn, they cancelled our room block out
of fear of losing business. Apparently losing our business
doesn't matter to them. My explanation that we are one of the
last regions to finish our season fell on deaf ears. I guess
they think you are supposed to reserve a room before you know you
need one.
Anyway, I shared my
aggravation (the long version) with State Secretary, Cheryll
Gregory, and asked her to inform the City of Gonzales. Cheryll
says there is a new motel that should be open by the week of the
finals. She will take care of getting us a room block either
at the new motel or at the Best Western when some of their
reservations move to the new motel. I will keep you posted on
what is going on and where to call for rooms.

ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO
KNOW?
Every year, the National
Directors meet to discuss rule changes for the next season.
All new rules will be in effect at the State Finals and National
Finals. It is your responsibility to know the changes that
affect your events.
Here is a copy of the rule changes for the 2008-2009 season.
These will be included in your new rulebook you will receive in the
fall.
COGGINS
PAPERS
If you have a copy the coggins
papers on the horse or horses you plan to compete on in Gonzales,
please bring them with you to Plainview. You will need these
at check-in at the State Finals. By turning them in early,
they will already be on file and should make the check-in process a
little smoother.
